|
|
As has been reported by others, iTunes 4.7 stores the keys in a differnt location than previous version of iTunes. This isn't a problem for those of you who have upgraded from previous versions of iTunes to iTunes 4.7, because 4.7 does not delete your keys from the old location when it's installed, thus hymn and Jhymn continue to work. For those of you have never had a previous version of iTunes on your system (new computer, formatted your hard drive, or are a new user and 4.7 is the first version you installed), hymn and Jhymn will not function correctly.
Here's how to work around the problem. First, deauthorize your computer in iTunes 4.7 by clicking the Advanced menu and selecting Deauthorize Computer. Enter your AppleID and password to complete the operation. Next remove v4.7 from your computer. This will not remove your music or your music meta data (ratings, playlists, etc.). Next, go to http://www.tucows.com/preview/333602.html and download iTunes and install iTunes 4.6. Once iTunes 4.6 is installed open it and play a song that you've previously purchased. iTunes will prompt you to authorize your computer. Once your system is authorized, the DRM keys will be copied to the proper location on your system and you should be able to use hymn or Jhymn.
If you feel like upgrading back to 4.7, download it and install it. As I stated above, iTunes 4.7 will not remove the keys from the location where v4.6 and below stores them, so after reinstalling 4.7, hymn and Jhymn will still work.
If you want 4.6 you better get it now. I don't know how much longer Tucows will mirror 4.6 before they go to the latest release. |

| Woulnd't it be easier to simply use a symlink so that Hymn looks for the key in the new location ? |

| This doesn't work. At least not for me on Windows 2000. 4.7 must move the keys. =( |

| I am unable to uninstall 4.7. I still have 4.6 and want to install it. When I try to use the uninstaller everything works as normal but Itunes still remains. What's wrong. BTW I did deauthorize the computer. |

this is what i did:
open itunes
go to advance options
check deauthorize computer, click on deauthorize then ok
then it will prompt for a password, put password then you know what's next
close i tunes,go to control panel,add remove,remove itunes 4.7
install itunes 4.6
open itunes
go to advance
authorize computer
put password then ok
copy folder from itunes to hymn folder
drag and drop a song to hymn.exe
it will create a mp4a file
try playing it on winamp
if it plays,success
it won't play on windows media player
unless you convert it,i used dbamp to convert it to mp3
success |

|
|
I haven't even tried removing drm from itunes since I got my new pc working a few days ago. Since I installed iTunes 4.7 on that PC, I guess I'll be looking to follow these notes and go to 4.6 then upgrade to 4.7. I'm sure I archived 4.6 somewhere in my pile o' CDs.
QUESTION: So once I get 4.6 up and authorize the PC, I understand that hymn will work again. Then I can upgrade to 4.7 and hymn will still work on those files. But will hymn work on new files that I download with 4.7?
If not, then this fix is only short term... because Apple will soon make everyone upgrade to a rev after 4.6.
Thanks... |

| The link to get itunes 4.6 (off of tucows) does not seem to work unless they are having problems. Does anyone know of another ftp to get itunes 4.6? |

I don't mean to be an ass, but why use iTunes 4.6?
The reason to use 4.6 is so that Hymn can find your keys from the ones that iTunes uses directly. FairKeys will eliminate this problem because you needn't depend on a certain version of iTunes.
Use FairKeys and Hymn and you shouldn't have problems. Or better yet, use JHymn (find it on the Downloads page here at hymn-project.org... it works for Mac or Win) or my application iRevolt (only for Win). _________________ "Hooray! I'm Helping!" - Dr. Zoidberg while being held Hostage. |

You're not being an ass.... Just a little too excited over my simple post, that's all.
While I'm pretty experienced when it comes to digital media and all... using iTunes is kinds of new to me. I avoided it until they started to offer music I couldn't get elsewhere. And I'll pay for music, but dammit I had better be able to use it fairly afterwards.
So I use iTunes only as a means to purchase music and that's it. I don't even use it to load my iPod (I use Anapod instead).
So I used to use hymn as a way to remove the DRM and then eventually convert them to MP3. And yeah... I know all about the loss of quality and I just don't care. MP3s work nice in TiVo, iPod, etc... so I stick with 'em.
Anyway... I couldn't find enough to tell me how Jhymn and FairKeys play into all this.
All I want to do is remove the drm on m4ps so I can use dbPowerAmp to make wavs and/or MP3s. I'll poke around at jhymn and see it all makes sense to me. But I hope answered why I use iTunes 4.7.
If jhymn lets me rip the tracks from my iTunes files... great. |

Oh... Now I remember. I'm afraid of these apps that ask for my email and password to download keys. If the app broadcasts that info elsewhere... I'm screwed.
I guess I'll go back to the old fashioned burn it/rip it/encode it method. |

If you're willing and able to study the source code, make sure it's safe, and then do your own build, then you won't have to worry about such things.
Or you can just trust us. |
